Dangerous Foods

Some foods commonly enjoyed by humans are dangerous to puppies. Below is a list of dangerous foods that you must avoid giving your puppy.

Alcoholic Beverages
: Alcoholic beverages pose much the same temptation and hazard to your puppy as to humans. A drunk dog displays behavior analogous to that of an intoxicated person. However, hops, which is a plant used in making beer, can cause malignant hyperthermia in dogs, usually with fatal results. Certain breeds, such as Greyhounds, seem particularly sensitive to hop toxicity, but hops should be kept away from all dogs. Even small amounts of hops can trigger a potentially deadly reaction.

Chocolate/Caffeine
: Puppies love the flavor of chocolate, but chocolate in sufficient doses is lethally toxic to your puppy. Chocolate contains theobromine, a chemical stimulant that, together with caffeine and theophylline, belongs to the group of methylxanthine alkaloids. Symptoms from chocolate can include staggering, labored breathing, vomiting, diarrhea, hallucinations, internal bleeding, tremors, abdominal pain, seizures, fever, heart rate increased, arrhythmia, coma, death.

Grapes/Raisins
: As few as a handful of raisins or grapes can make your puppy very ill. Symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and lethargy.

Onions/Garlic
: Onions contain thiosulfate which can causes hemolytic anemia in your puppy. Onions and garlic both contain the toxic ingredient thiosulphate but out of the two, onions are more dangerous. Symptoms include Hemolytic Anemia, labored breathing, liver damage, vomiting, diarrhea, discolored urine. Usually symptoms appear a few days after ingesting onions. Garlic also includes the toxic ingredient thiosulphate but is less toxic and large amounts would usually have to be eaten to cause illness.

Mushrooms
: Certain mushrooms can be fatal to your puppy. Amanita phalloides is the most commonly reported severely toxic species of mushroom. Symptoms include drooling, abdominal pain, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, coma, death.

Xylitol: Xylitol is a sugar substitute used in chewing gum, chewable vitamins, candy, toothpaste, and other products. There have been cases of foods, candies and gums containing xylitol causing toxic or even fatal liver damage in dogs and should be avoided.

Nuts/Macademia Nuts: Nuts, including Macademia Nuts must be kept away from your puppy as well. Macadamia nuts along with most other kinds of nuts can cause serious illness in your puppy. Their high phosphorus content is said to possibly lead to bladder stones. Symptoms include tremors, stiffness, abdominal pain, and weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters. Affected dogs are often unable to rise and are distressed, usually panting. Some affected dogs have swollen limbs and show pain when the limbs are manipulated.
